How To Take An Enema

  1. The quantity of water for the enemas should be 2 litres.
  2. The temperature of the enemas should be body temperature or just above. Use boiled filtered water that has been cooled.  Or you may fill the enema kit approximately just over ¾ full with filtered room temperature water and then top up with boiling water from the kettle. Remember to keep checking the temperature of the water.
  3. Flush out your enema kit with hot water from the bath or sink, checking that all parts are clean.
  4. To perform the enema pour the water into your enema kit and hang it on a bathroom door hook or some such convenient place high up so that by using gravitational force the liquid can feed into the bowel. (The shower, over-hanging the bath is a good place). Make sure the tap on the enema is closed tightly before you pour. Use string or a coat hanger.
  5. To get the air bubbles out of the system, turn on the tap for one second, so the liquid runs out smoothly. Close the tap again tightly.
  6. The room that you use for your enema should be warm with towels placed on the floor (if you are not using the bath). Many enema kits leak-don’t worry. (Blue tack to the rescue)
  7. It is necessary to void (empty) the rectum. Introducing as much water into the bowel as you can handle before releasing into the lavatory voids the bowel. Then introduce the remaining liquid and hold for as long as possible – there are no rules, some people can hold it in longer that others. Do the best you can.
  8. Miriam’s method: Sit on your bottom, facing the kit with your legs spread out in front of you and using a lubricant – olive oil, sweet almond oil or similar – grease the end of the tube as well as your anus and insert into your anus. Turn on the tap and breathe normally as the liquid goes in. Allow as much water to go in as you can take. As you get used to the process, you may start to breathe through the gripping sensations (if any) and get more water inside. You may massage your stomach in an anti-clockwise direction, easing all the liquid in. Relax and breathe. Move onto your back. Continue to massage the stomach and keep the fluid in for as long as possible. Finally release into the lavatory. During the process, it is a good idea to stay in close contact with the tap on the enema kit, in case you need to turn off the flow fast! (Two drops of ginger essential oil in a carrier such as sweet almond oil can greatly reduce griping sensations and help the bowel to relax) – but do not get this onto your bottom!
  9. Alternate between holding a small amount of water in for a longer time, or a large amount of water in for a shorter time.
  10. If you are having coffee enemas, only take one per day. And make sure you take the coffee enema in the morning, preferably before 11am. They can be very stimulating. Prepare 1-2 tablespoons of organic coffee in a coffee plunger, as if you were making a normal coffee. Add to the top of your kit, as part of the hot water. Again remember to check the temperature. Please seek professional advice.
